Reality TV and Dance |
The birth of reality TV as we know it today really began with Big Brother, created by a Dutch company but since having enjoyed global success. This in turn led to further reality shows and a large focus has shifted to talent style shows. Pop Idol, American Idol and X Factor, for example, enabled singers to attend open auditions and thus enrol in a televised competition to win recording contracts. But since 2004, dance has been as big a feature on TV as singing based talent shows.
‘Strictly Come Dancing’ hit TV screens in the UK in 2004. It was shown on the BBC and involved famous faces pairing up with less famous professional dancers and dancing live each week for a couple of months. One pair is voted off by the public each week. The concept was simple - but the British simply loved it! There has been a series every single years since its launch in the UK as well as several spin offs for charities. ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ was also the inspiration for the USA’s ‘Dancing With the Stars.’
The BBC is the home of another reality TV show focussing on dance as well. ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ was hosted by Cat Deeley and dubbed itself ‘the search for Britain’s favourite dancer.’ Prior to the series, there were a series of open auditions in which any dancer could attend. This was whittled down to 14 dancers, who competed each week according to the challenges set by the producers. The winner walked off with 100,000 and a slot to dance on the same show in Hollywood.
‘Britain’s Got Talent,’ is another reality show that features Simon Cowell. With the prize of a performance slot at the famous Royal Variety Show up for grabs, absolutely any act is invited to audition in front of a live audience. This, of course, leads to all sorts of acts from singers, to magicians to contortionists and gymnasts. But the dancers come through the auditions thick and fast. In fact, of the three previous winners, 2 were dance acts. This show also led to a spin off, ‘America’s Got Talent.’
So dance and reality TV are going hand in hand right now. The three named here are just a handful. Reality TV featuring dance is also leading to an increase in the number of people involved in dance, which can only be a good thing!!
