It cost too much and when you have a low budget such as myself you have to accept the cheapest thing on the market. I chosen the BCD 3000 due to it’s compatibility with PC. Now I can mix mp3’s directly from my PC and I love it =) So you don’t need a expensive equipment too be a DJ =) Equipment: Behringer BCD 3000, Virtual DJ ( also known as VDJ ), my computer, Nokia N95…. The House Rocking, Roof Tearing Good Doctor of Eufaula whose real name is Henry Franklin performing at the “Doctor’s House in Eufaula Alabama Saturday Feb 16 2008. He is to southern dj’s what James Brown is to the younger generation and his influence is widespread from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi. The Good Doctor has been performing dj shows since the early 70’s. What makes him different is the style of dj he developed and made his own. Most dj at that time would just spin the favorite records, kept quiet and keep a low profile throughout the show. Good Doctor would take the songs..play the instrumental and make his own song out of that particular record. He would sing, rap and totally entertain the crowd with showmanship. Those songs that didn’t have a instrumental he would “punch out” in between vocals and develop a “call and response” method to each song and have the crowd at a fever pitch. This was long before the era of rap so a lot of what he was doing was very innovative at the time. There were times he was critized for “talking to much over the song”..but his response was..”you came out to be entertained and it’s not just about the song..you can hear the song on the radio”. He was one of the first dj’s to not just based his pay on a guaranteed amount of money but on a percentage of the gate (just like James Brown)..thus making huge amounts of money that was unheard of for a dj at that time. In the 70’s and the 80’s the cost to go to a club was only 2 or 3 dollars and Good Doctor was bringing home at the end of the night 00 or 00 a night! Unheard of at that time!
Good doctor was also very instrumental with the entire show from the latest and best equipment. (He would have 10 to 15 speakers with several amps etc..) He had a “crew” that would set his equipment early that night. They were called the “The Boys”! The Boys traveled in a different van (wore red & white
outfits) and would entertain the crowd before he got there. Good Doctor would always travel in the latest vehicles (corvette, lincoln continental, etc..) and would make a grand entrance! His boys would then leave the stage and flank him side by side while woman would scream and take pictures and throw panties on the stage etc.. He would always start his performance with a slow record and then would start “working the crowd”!! Good Doctor would perform all over southeast part of the country all during the 70’s and 80’s..
In the early 90’s Doctor retired from the road and went into a business with his then girlfriend Elaine and decided to open his own club called “The Doctor’s Hse”.. He continues to be a major draw and the club still entertains many throughout the south. On a occasion Good Doctor will still hit the road and do selective dates but his focus is mostly around the wiregrass area.
Henry Franklin (good doctor) also is a gospel radio anncr that has entertained thousands with his “soul gospel” playing everything from Mighty Clouds of Joy, Willie Banks & the Messengers etc..Did he get flak for being on “both sides of the fence?” A little..but God is everywhere and only he can judge. The truth is that Good Doctor/Henry Franklin has entertain thousands and thousands of people and touched many lives in the process. Many Dj’s own their careers for the style he has developed and a lot of money has been made because of what he helped create. Costee McNair, JoJo Mctoy, Darryl E, Bryant Corbitt, Billy J and the Partymakers, Disco Willie, Dr. Funk, Jean the Queen, etc..etc..and the list goes on and on..Sure time always makes a change but to know where you’re going you need to look where you came from..
