A crowd gathers for Lotus in the Park, as they are drawn together by live music and dance beats. Beyond a pristine white giant tent, people look on and listen to Sogbety Diomande’s West African Drum and Dance Company workshop. Peek inside the tent, and you’ll see sweaty dancers that try to keep up with their African instructors; their arms are outstretched like a flock of birds.
Known as Lotus World Music and Arts Festival, Lotus in the Park is one of seven afternoon music/dance/art workshops held in this public event. The sixteenth annual Lotus festival will be held during the first week of October. You’ll see sets wherein you are encouraged to join in the fun, besides performances wherein you are just a spectator. There will also be a craft show aside from the dancing, and it will showcase some of the more unique and vibrant African themed arts and crafts around.
A few notable dance enthusiasts come to view the performances. In past gatherings, dancers from the Chinese Folk Dance Company, the Royal Lao Orchestra, Turkish Sufi Dancers, and the Mahotella Queens were there to watch the shows. Notable music makers as well have also arrived to take part in the festivities. People over the past fifteen celebrations have danced to the music of Paris Combo, Les Yeux Noirs, Yo’Jo, and some others.
I have learned to start each evening with a light dinner and some wine to wash it down. Based on my experience, it helps me get in the mood. Last year, I even experienced sitting down next to two Frenchmen while eating. They glanced at the pasta I was eating and immediately called the waiter over to tell him they wanted what I was having.
