It was a Robert Johnson tune called “Crossroads”, played by The Cream with Eric Clapton on guitar. I never heard anything like that before in my life and boy was I impressed. Because until that very moment, I had never considered learning an instrument.
A had a good friend and he had taught himself playing the guitar a while back ago. So there was “Crossroads” blasting out of his tape recorder and he smoothly played along to the song. I was so impressed by that and it motivated me to go out and buy a guitar for myself.

So I went out and I got an electric guitar. It was a “Rockson”. I had never heard of that brand before and I guess the only reason I bought it was because it was snow white and it reminded me of a guitar that Jimi Hendrix played in a video I had seen a few weeks prior to that. And secondly, it was affordable.
But that was some lousy guitar, I tell you. Uneven frets and a slightly twisted neck! But all that really didn’t mean anything to me. It was after all my first guitar and I started to play right away. Or to be more precise: I attempted to play.
I quickly came to understand and accept that I was no talent. Learning was really hard for me and it took me way longer than it should have normally. I remember that I broke many strings because I had difficulties tuning the guitar. And on top of that, since a regular electric guitar always comes with metal strings, my finger tips hurt brutally. But I guess I had to pay the price for not listening and getting myself an acoustic guitar first.
Against all odds, I still made slow but good progress. It probably took me way longer than it should have, but at least I didn’t give up. And now, 20 years later, I’m not as technically savvy as an Eddie VanHalen, but I can play quite well according to the feedback I get from others.
The key was that I always kept playing a little bit over all these years and since I had started. There’s barely a day going by when I didn’t have a chance to get to play at all. And even if it’s just ten or twenty minutes practicing a new scale, that’s enough to prevent your fingers from getting rusty.
It’s a wonderful hobby and even nowadays that the era of Rock ‘n’ Roll seems to have passed, even my kids like watch and listen when I play a Boogie or Blues.

Certainly when it comes to stringed instruments like the guitar the better quality ones will have been used wood. But along with wood there are other materials such as graphite and plastic which can be used for making cheap acoustic guitars. The problem with these types is that they will not sound as good.

You will find that the solid wood top give a much richer and fuller tone to the sound it makes. Plus if you can afford to then buy a guitar which not only has a solid wood top but a solid wood back and sides as well.
There are plenty of such guitars available and one that should be high on your list to consider is the Seagull S6. Although not cheap it is certainly value for money as you are unlikely to want to buy another acoustic guitar once you have this one. This particular guitar has a solid cedar top and the sides are made from solid mahogany and which is why it makes such a beautiful sound when played. The fact is that this guitar is of such high quality then many professional musicians will keep this guitar even though they may have several more expensive ones as well.
You can expect to pay around $400 to $500 for this guitar, but if you are really serious about learning to play the guitar then it is wise to invest a little extra in the instrument you buy. However, if you search online you may well find that you are actually able to get some really great deals on this guitar if you spend time looking for it.
As well as the Seagull S6 acoustic guitar there are other ones which you may want to consider such as the Yamaha F310. This guitar is cheaper because of the material used to make it. The top is made from spruce rather than cedar and sides and back are made using mahogany as the Seagull S6 is. Because of the difference in the top wood used one can expect to pay about $150 to $200 for this acoustic guitar. It is the price of this guitar which is why those just learning to play the guitar will buy one.

Although there are lots of different guitars available which can be purchased for less than $100 these are not the type that you should be buying when learning to play the guitar. The reason being is that you will find that the sound they produce is terrible because of the materials they have been made from. Which as many others have found results in them finding it difficult to play and so decide to give up learning how to play them altogether.
Therefore if you are serious about getting a cheap acoustic guitar for either yourself or someone else then you can not go far wrong with the ones mentioned above. Get Lessons from a Real Person First
Online lessons, books, and dvds are excellent resources. But, I believe, they just can’t take the place of a real live instructor - especially when you’re just getting started. An actual live person has the ability to reach out and demonstrate the proper way to hold your guitar, exactly how to position your fingertips, and the correct ways to strum. But, the most important thing that an actual person can do is correct your mistakes in real time. This just isn’t possible with online guitar lessons, books, and videos. This is essential when you’re just starting out. Go to your instructor for a few lessons, or a few weeks until you get a good foundation established. Then you’ll be better prepared to seek out other types of instruction.
Regular Practice is Best
If at all possible, fit daily practice into your routine. It’s not a good idea to skip more than a couple of days between practice sessions. It doesn’t take an hour a day to get good. You can make real progress putting in a solid 10 or 15 minutes a day. If you only practice once or twice a week, you won’t progress nearly as fast. Even if those sessions are hour long sessions. Muscle memory and guitar reflexes need consistent, regular reinforcement.

In an effort to save money, many beginning guitar students start out with a low-cost, poor quality guitar. This is never a wise decision. You might be saving money, but these cheap guitars are difficult to play - even for an experienced guitarist. The string action is usually way too high (strings sit high off the neck) - which makes it difficult to press them down and form notes and chords. These guitars have a hard time staying in tune. They often go out of tune after a couple minutes of playing. It’s no fun having to stop and retune your guitar every few minutes. And fret buzz is usually an issue. Fret buzz will make your playing really suffer. Good quality beginner guitars don’t cost a lot of money. You can get a nice, playable guitar in the $180 - $200 range.
